8TH Grade Social Studies

Welcome to another great year at West Millbrook Middle School. As a member of the West Millbrook community, I am very excited to get to know all of you, and hopefully you will find Social Studies and U.S. History as engaging as I do.
In this course, we will be analyzing the cause and effect relationships of people and events that created our nation into what it is today.
Students will learn to:
-Apply historical thinking to understand the creation and development of North Carolina and the United States.
-Understand the ways in which conflict, compromise and negotiation have shaped North Carolina and the United States.
-Understand the factors that contribute to change and continuity in North Carolina and the United States.
-Understand the geographic factors that influenced North Carolina and the United States.
-Understand the economic activities of North Carolina and the United States.
-Analyze how democratic ideals shaped government in North Carolina and the United States.
-Understand the role that citizen participation plays in societal change.
-Understand how different cultures influenced North Carolina and the United States.
ASSESSMENTS OVERVIEW:
*Tests/Major Projects- 40%
*Classwork/Homework- 35%
*Quizzes/Learning Extensions/Mini-Projects- 25%
MATERIALS:
Students are expected to have with them at all times:
1 ½” binder
Notebook paper
Pencil or pen (blue or black)
Hand-Held pencil sharpener
Colored Pencils or Markers
ATTENDANCE:
WMMS tardy policy will apply to this classroom. The student is tardy if not in the classroom by the assigned time.
MAKE-UP WORK IF ABSENT:
If a student is absent, it is the STUDENT’s responsibility to obtain the assignments that he/she missed. This information can be found in your student folder or on my website. Students have TWO days to turn in make-up work for every day that the student was absent.
“DRESS FOR SUCCESS” DAY
-Students will be awarded extra credit points for dressing professionally ONCE every two weeks.
-Attire must follow these guidelines AND the WMMS DRESS CODE!
Young Men
-Suit or a nice pair of slacks
-Shirt must have a collar
-Must wear a tie or bowtie
-No jeans or shorts
-no flip flops
Young Ladies
-Dress or a nice pair of slacks or skirt with a nice top
-No jeans or shorts
-No flip flops
STUDENTS EXPECTIONS:
We will create an environment that is good for learning.
We will respect each other with our words, in our ideas, and in our actions.
We will work together to improve our classroom, our school, and our community.
We will give our best effort to improve our academic performance and become productive citizens of our world.
-No gum or food in class
-No sleeping in class
-Cell phones and electronic devices turned off and out of sight unless they are allowed for a classroom assignment. If these items are disruptive to the classroom setting, they will be taken from the student and placed at the front office for parent pick-up. (Of course, this includes texting).
